KERALA REDS 'WILL NOT RETURN'

INDIAN BORN Archbishop A Thomas Pothacamury, of Bangalore, who visited London this week, says that Communism will not return to power in Kerala.

His view seems to be shared by other Indian Catholic leaders. "Catholic influence is felt in the fields of education and social services,' he says, " our schools and colleges are popular among all classes of persons, politicians,

officials and businessmen." It is in this educational sphere that Catholics are able to bring pressure to bear on the surrounding nonChristian population in the struggle against Communism."

Emancipation from British rule has been followed by a re-organisation of Church life. Over five and a half million Catholics now have 72 diocesan bishops, compared to 53 in 1947, 45 of the bishops being Indian-born.
