Silver jubilee

ENGLISH Martyrs Church, Blackheath, Birmingham, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a Mass on May 14 at 7.00pm. Archbishop Maurice Couve de Murville will officiate.

Vicar unrepentant

A CHURCH of England vicar who celebrated communion in his London parish along with a woman ordained to the priesthood by the Anglican Church of Canada, has refused to apologise for the storm he has created. The Revd Barry Naylor said he believed such violations of canon law were not uncommon. The woman, the Revd Kate Merriman, had been attending meetings organised by the Movement for the Ordination of Women.

Cafod donates

THE CATHOLIC Fund for Overseas Development has sent £5,000 each to Caritas Argentina and Caritas Bolivia to help thousands made homeless by severe flooding. Some 50,000 families are said to be without shelter in the two countries.

Miskitos have say

THREE WOMEN representing the Miskito Indian and Creole communities of Nicaragua will start a three-week tour of Britain on May 19. Both communities have had differences with the Sandinista government, which has opened talks on autonomy. The women are, however, opponents of the US backed "contra" rebels.
