Knocked for six

From Mr Harry Boyle SIR— How pleased I was to read the Abbot of Downside's Notebook (March 2).1 was particularly delighted with his description of sitting alongside Cardinal George Pell to watch the England cricket team beat the Aussies.

I recalled the wave of irritation I felt when reading, before Christmas, that the Archbishop of Sydney had bragged about how his national side would smash the Poms. The annoyance was made worse when Ricky Ponting's team did thrash us in the tests. I sank into a grave depression.

However, victory over the enemy down under in the CB series finals provided a bit of relief and it is comforting to know that Cardinal Pell was there to see it. God bless you, dear Abbot.

Yours faithfully, HARRY BOYLE London W14
