In the line of fire

From Miss Katherine Gray SIR — Your leading article (March 2) refers to someone as saying that seeing current operations of the Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan is "like watching the Charge of the Light Brigade in slow motion". Ironically, we do have a Light Brigade, now in Iraq, and which has had its share of fatalities. An unfortunate choice of name for an army unit if ever there was one. And it has become routine for condolences to be expressed by party leaders at Prime Minister's Questions. And recently we have heard of two more deaths in Afghanistan.

The Highland Gunners, pictured on your front page, have now returned from Iraq. But they will be deploying to Afghanistan next month. Yes, we must pray for our Armed Forces. As you said, "Let us be quick to reach for our rosaries."

Yours faithfully, KATHERINE GRAY By e-mail
