article (February 16) about St Wulstan's choir and the follow-up comments from Fr Anthony Davies (Letters, February 23). Fr Davies suggests that the choir may be having a detrimental effect on the parish, causing "the flight of valued parishioners to neighbouring parishes in search of fuller involvement in the Mass".
At least they have a choice. What about parishioners elsewhere (equally valued, one hopes) fleeing from dreadful hymns, embarrassing gestures, badly played guitars, giggling altar girls, irritating bidding prayers and so forth in search of dignity and reverence? They rarely have the option of taking refuge in a neighbouring parish and may have to travel many miles to fmd what they need.
I hope St Wulstan's will continue its efforts to raise musical and liturgical standards and at the same time encourage all parishioners to participate fully in the Mass.
