ST FRANCIS XAviEa College First XI football team retained the Greater London Schools Cup after defeating Leyton Sixth Form College 2-1 last month. Team captain Peter McSherry picked up the fifth trophy in seven years for the Catholic Sixth Form College thanks to goals from Michael Doherty and Ben Abbey.
Musical visitor
YEAR SEVEN GIRLS from Gumley House Convent School, Isleworth, Middlesex, enjoyed an hour long concert given by the celebrated Australian liturgist Monica Brown a fortnight ago. The concert and a workshop on musical styles were given by Ms Brown as part of her countrywide tour exploring creative ways of teaching the Gospel.
Chile bound
THREE SIXTH FORM girls from New Hall School, Chelmsford, Essex, and three sixth form boys from Arnpleforth College, Yorkshire, hope to travel to teach English in two schools in Santiago, Chile, later in the year, before going off to university. The scheme is run through the Chilean Manquenne Movement, although the young travellers have to raise much of the Cog of the trip themselves.
Hallam pilgrimage
FORTY EIGHT YOUNG people from Catholic schools across the Hallam diocese this Sunday are holding a reunion after their successful part in the annual diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes. The group, led by diocesan youth chaplain Fr Kevan Grady, was among 400 Catholics who travelled to the French shrine last month where they helped the sick.
Soccer selection
14-yEAR-ou, DANrut Slatter from St Benedict's College, Colchester, has been given a scholarship to the Football Association's School of Excellence at Lillishall in Shrophire. The opportunity opens up the likelihood of Daniel playing for the England youth team and boosts his chances of turning professional.
Tough guy
YEAR NINE PUPIL Benedict O'Neill from St Thomas More School, Bristol, a fortnight ago took part in the annual Ten Tors Expedition on Dartmoor. Benedict spent two days on a trek of 35 miles while carrying a rucksack weighing 27 pounds. Meanwhile, St Thomas More School next week tackles its first drama production of theyear, the play "Living with Lady Macbeth" by Rob John.
Union post
JEAN ALLGROVE, TEACHER at St Augustine of Canterbury School, Taunton, has become President of the Somerset Area of the National Union of Teachers. She was welcomed to the post by NUT National President Doug McAvoy during a ceremony at the school last month. Meanwhile year 11 pupil Kelly Bentinck won £200 and a trophy when she reached the regional final of Spirit of Enterprise, a careers competition.
Television break
14-YEAR-OLD PUPIL Fiona Meaney from St George's School, Westminster, is to appear on BBC's new Junior Big Break programme in the autumn. The show is modelled on Big Break, where contenders are paired with celebrity snooker players to answer quiz questions and Fiona was picked from among 12 applicants from her school.
