IN THE last few issues of the Catholic Herald, there have been many articles and letters pointing out the contradiction between our government's attitudes and the teaching of the Church.
Examples include the Pope's statement at Coventry and the government's conduct in the Falkland Islands, the Pope's statement on nuclear weapons at Hiroshima and the Trident and Cruise programmes and the Pope's encyclical on work, and the government's attitude to labour relations and unemployment.
In the light of this, isn't it about time we asked whether or not it is possible to be both a Christian and a member or supporter of the Conservative Party? Should we not ask this question to our Catholic Conservative M.P.'s, some of whom, like Sir John Biggs-Davison, wish to depose a bishop like Victor Guazzelli, who speaks out for peace in exactly the same terms as Pope John Paul?
