BREVITIES

The general meeting of the Westminster branch of the Catholic Women's League will take place on Saturday, July 10, at 2.45 p.m. at the Assumption Convent, Kensington Square, W.8 (by kind permission of the Reverend Mother.) The Archbishop of Westminster has graciously consented to preside and the speaker will be Mr. Alfred Denville, M.P.

The arrival of six newly ordained Ukrianian priests gave the Society of St. John Chrysostom an opportunity of arranging the celebration of a Liturgy according to the Byzantine Ukrainian Rite in St. Patrick's Church, Soho Square, by kind permission of Canon Dunford, on Friday. July 2.

Canon Roskell was with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Birmingham when they visited 40 Basque children at Avoncroft, near Evesham. The Lord Mayor expressed his satisfaction at the way in which the children were being cared for and made a suggestion that the premises would be more complete with gymnasium apparatus.

Fifteen men and women. five of them converts, were confirmed last Sunday at the Church of St. John the Baptist, Dartmouth, by the Bishop of Plymouth.

The Tyburn martyrs of 1535, BB. Richard Reynolds and John Hole, who was parish priest at Isleworth, were honoured by the parish on Sunday, June 27. when the annual procession Was held through the streets of the parish.

Glorious sunshine prevailed for the annual sports last Saturday at the Salesian College. Chertsey. There was keen competition between the four Houses, and the Challenge Cup went to St. Aidan's (T. Conlon, captain). The " Victor Ludoruns of the seniors was Norman Brent (St. Dunstan's), and of the juniors D. Rini (St. Bede's), while D. Stone and M. Hagger carried off the trophies for the smaller boys. T. Conlon broke his own previous record in the 220 yards, which he completed in 26 four-fifths secs.. and nearly tied with N. Brent for the title of " Victor Ludorum."

The standard of 'Education at St Francis's elementary schools, Tottenham, is apparent from the results of scholarship examinations recently held there. In a school of 200, 22 took the examinations, 19 were successful. Ten secondary, one technical, and eight central scholarships were gained.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Weymouth performed the opening ceremony on Wednesday of the annual gala in the grounds of the Sacred Heart Convent, Weymouth.

A telegram of good wishes from the Pope was received by the Rev. M. T. Beckett, 0.B.E., Rector of the parish of All Saints'. Kenton, who celebrated the silver jubilee of his priesthood last week,
