Politicians in a stew

IF YOU feel strong enough for a quiz, how about Who Said This?

"Mankind has found itself faced with this choice — either peoples and states do everything they can to achieve peace — or they will be thrown into an abyss of a destructive nuclear world war."

So. how do you guess? ... Pope John Paul? Sean McBride? Edward Kennedy, Ronald Reagan or President Carter? Mrs Gandhi. Chancellor Schmidt or President Sadat? The answer is, in fact, President Brezhnev, to a conference in Sofia discussing the international situation.

Why should we be surprised at him saying it? If his citizens were to read it in Pravda as coming from Margaret Thatcher or Jimmy Carter would there be cynical guffaws over the borsch or the vodka? I guess there would. How can either of us know who's telling the truth? I spilt a whole spoonful of Irish Stew when I read Brezhnev.
