Brain-boggling, flaming fiasco shows up folly of TV ratings

NO TELEVISION performer worth his salt pays a pennyworth of attention to ratings — unless they happen to place him. her or it somewhere in the magic top ten, Sometimes figures published boggle the brain with their unbelievability.

One such boggle occurred at the turn of the year when the BBC announced that a film called Towering Inferno not only had millions staring at their flaming sets but more millions than stared at anything else that particular week or weekend.

I am sure you feel as I do there must be a mistake somewhere. Why would hordes of reasonably sane people flock around a movie that not only has been around the circuits for years but that consists largely of burning floors. fire brigades, people screaming and falling and hammering against closed doors and generally reminding us that death is only a match away? Or, in that case, a faulty wire or a greedy builder away.

I know. when I saw my son beginning to watch it. I just couldn't believe it and sat down with him to try to understand.

It was a very long film.
