impressions are best avoided. !Mr Garman fails to appreciate that the reason for objecting to the use of 'man' to mean everyone is that it is misleading. Considerable research in liturgy has shown that though it has a generic meaning in theory. very many people only conjure up a Male image for this word.

It is important not to underestimate the subtle conditioning involved in talking of the laity only in terms that seem to be masculine.
