Christians in the Spice Islands. Bishop Peter Mandagi spoke out after Christian refugees reported a wave of new human rights violations in the Moluccas by the Javabased Muslim paramilitary group, Lashkar Jihad.
The militiamen had forced about 1,000 captives on the islands of Kesui and Teor to convert to Islam and even circumcised hundreds of people at gunpoint to make them "true Muslims".
Bishop Mandagi said he believed the fundamentalist group was determined to "Islamise the Christian population".
He said: "We fear that is their goal. They don't just want a conflict, they want to drive us out or change us. These atrocities on Kesui were an attempt to show who is master."
