New head for Dominicans

FR PETER EDGAR, 62. is the new head of the English Dominicans. lie was elected during the provincial chapter taking place this week at the English Dominican headquarters in Haverstock Hill, North West London. The appointment has been approved by Rome.

Fr Edgar has been the provincial treasurer for the past ten years. In his time he has acted as Prior at St Dominic's Priory in London. and St Dominic's in Newcastle.

Born in Newcastle, Fr Edgar is the son of Mr Leo Edgar, who for many years was the National President of the Society of Si Vincent de Paul. He was educated at St Cuthbert's Grammar School. Newcastleon-Tyne, and Blackfriars College, Oxford. He joined the Dominicans in 1950, having served in the Royal Navy during the second world war. He was ordained in 1956.

Fr Edgar now heads 130 Dominicans, many of whom work in Africa and the Caribbean. One of the 19 delegates gathered in London for the Chapter is Fr Gilbert Coxliead from the island of Grenada.
