ROOM AT THIS INN
Three new Mass centres
oNE of three new Mass centres recently opened in the Nottingham area is at the Sherwin Arms, a well-known inn at Bramcote, which has been taken over by Councillor Tom Gardner, J.P., and his wife, Mrs. Barbara Gardner, Nottingham diocesan president of the Union of Catholic Mothers.
Mr. and Mrs. Gardner found room in their inn for Mass, and it is being said there each Sunday at 9.45 am. by Fr. Benjamin Choyce, of Stapleford.
The two other centres are in the Sacred Heart parish. Carlton, Notts. One is on the Phcenix Farm Estate, where a women's club is used, the other at the British Sugar Beet Company's factory at Colwick for Irish workers there during the rush period, which will end in January.
Dr. H. E. Calnan
is retiring
Dr. Herbert E. Calnan, Dean of Mortlake, diocesan censor, diocesan synodal examiner and for the past 20 years parish priest of St. Raphael's, Kingston-on-Thames, is retiring to Cornwall. Dr. Calnan. who was ordained in Rome in 1910, is vice-chairman of the Catholic Truth Society, a former director of the Southwark Catholic Rescue Society and county vice-president of the British Legion.
He has worked on many educational committees and has served in many Southwark parishes. He served as a military chaplain from 1918 to 1921, and as college chaplain at Mayfield from 1924 to 1927.
Parishioners organised a farewell concert and presentation last week attended by Mgr. Hubert Gibney, Vicar General, Mgr. Canon Collingwood, chairman of the Catholic Truth Society. and many other clergy and civic representatives, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Kingston.
Altar Guild's new Director
Paying tribute to the great work of the Archconfraternity of St. Stephen during the past 50 years, Cardinal Griffin in a speech shortly before his illness, said a special word of praise and thanks to Mgr, Sutton, the national director. The Cardinal announced that Mgr, Sutton has resigned and that his place will be taken by the Westminster diocesan director, Fr. John Marriott, who has been relieved of his office as diocesan director. The latter office has been filled by Mgr. Row, Master of Ceremonies at Westminster Cathedral.
ARCHBISHOP McGRATH will bless new premises for St. Vincent's Hostel for Working Boys at 73, Cardiff Road, Llandaff, Cardiff. on Sunday. December 11, at 2.30 p.m. The ceremony was postponed from November 26.
FORTY BOYS of Alderwasley Hall, Benedictine preparatory school for Belmont, near Matlock, were last week confirmed by Bishop Ellis of Nottingham.
