Kruschev ready to lose goodwill

RUSSIA is making a determined hid to get the support of the masses of the Burmese people and is prepared to sacrifice a lot of Western goodwill to get it.

That, whatever the actual details of what Mr. Kruschev did or did not say in Burma, is certain.

Russia's leaders have three clear purposes in mind: First: Burma must be won away from Western attachments. To inflame the surviving hatreds from an earlier period is to identify Burma again with the widespread Asian " rejection of the West."

Second: The Communist Party of Burma must be assisted in its fight for power.

Third: Communist China already has a far greater appeal to the

people of Asia than Red Russia ever had,

Russia is pleased to have her great Chinese ally at her side. But she has good reason to be disconcerted by the growth of China's influence at the expense of her own in this important area.

Kruschev has made an open attempt to regain for Russia the hegemony of Asia's Communist and national liberation movements, The Russian Communist leader's behaviour in Burma will make still more people doubt the wisdom of the British invitation to him to come to London with Marsha] Buigan in.
