opposes reforms
rrHE leader of a "traditional ist movement" which is opposed to the liturgical reforms has claimed that American Catholics "have been brainwashed by extremists of the clergy" and that the Church doctrine is "at stake".
Fr. Gommar de Pauw, of Mount St. Mary Seminary, Maryland, told a news conference last week that he will press for a national Catholic survey on liturgical changes. These changes, he said, had created a "hootenany atmosphere in the Mass. (A "hootenany" is a folk-singing gathering.) He protested against the "weakening" of various Church doctrines as a result of the

ecumenical movement. "I ant carrying the flag for Catholic men and women who have put the flag in my hand", Fr. de Pauw said. Cardinal Shehan or Baltimore is reported to have said that he regretted that the priest "has seen lit to take the stand that he has professed".
Fr. de Pauw told reporters that the "traditionalist movement" was not fighting the Pope and the bishops. "We are loyal obedient and faithful Catholics interested in carrying out the directives of the Holy Father and the Ecumenical Council as they were meant to be implemented aad not as extremists have interpreted them", he said.
He claimed that his movement had the "private" support of 30 bishops, hundreds of priests, and "we believe it represents the majority of American Catholics". He said a survey would be launched to determine the exact sentiments of the Catholic population. Pressed by reporters, he refused to name the bishops he claimed as supporters.
Fr. de Pauw, who is Belgian horn, said that his niovemeet had been mainly financed hy his family. But since last weekend. when it first came to public attention, 495 people had supported it. Five were said to be against it.
