Cheaper rates for telephone. trunk calls were hinted at last week by SE E:-nest Bennet, assistant Postmaster-General, when he opened the new post office at Newcastle. He intimated that in all probability Neve Year, 1936, would see the present system revised.

Concerning the penny postage. he said the limiter was always tinder consideration. At the moment to bring penny postage into operation %vodld cost E6,5-00,000, representing an addition of on the income-lax.

These had been good response to the introduction of the siepenny telegram rate, the revised parcel post rates, and the shilling trunk telephone serv:ce. The public was becoming mare and more telephone-minded. and the post oflice had now become a thoroughly popular institution
