A Leeds-based group is campaigning for legislation to limit the use of union fonds for morally. questionable causes. such as abortion and euthanasia.
The campaign has as yet no name. but has already circulated petition forms to every church in the Leeds diocese and expects up to 10.0(X) signatures. It has the hacking of Bishop Wheeler of I.eeds and Orthodox Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh.
It stakes its principle on the ninth article of the European Convention On Human • Rights: "Everyone has the right to Ireedom Or thought. conscience and religion: this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief and freedom, either alone or in community ‘vith others and in public or priv ate. to manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching practice and observance.
Mr Glynn Preston. the campaign secretary. hopes unions would be required to set up special funds or non-industrial moral issues.
The campaign was inspired by Pope Pius XI's encyclical Quadragesimo Anon. which held that unions should leave their Catholic members free to follow their consciences.
