—AN UNDERSTANDABLE CONFUSION
Calling it an ' understandable confusion," the Vatican Radio announcer last Friday referred to a report that had appeared " in an English Catholic paper in its issue of April 2," regarding the raising of the First Communion age in certain dioceses of France, including that of Lyons, where Cardinal Geilier is Archbishop.
The announcer explained that the age or the actual First Communion is not affected, but that the Bishops' order applies to the First Solemn Communion, which ,is made to the accompaniment of the renewal of the Baptismal Vows and ends a further period or more thorough study of the catechism. This celebration is customary among French Catholics, and it has now been deferred to the early 'teens in order to ensure a more fitting preparation.
This paper in fact published the report referred to in its issue of April 2. It received it exactly as printed from one of the most important Catholic news agencies.
