Miss Barbara Ward's able study of this diplomatically allimportant country gives a balanced picture of its difficult position and state. (Oxford University Press, 2s. 6d.) Between God and Man. John Hadtnan, author of Good God. gives a very modernistic twist to current demand for return to Christianity, arguing that for 400 years the Churches have refused to adjust their doctrines to current fashions—which he thinks a great pity, though we don't. (Longmans. 3s. 6d) The Life of Mother Mary Philomena Juliana Morel. This tiography of a French Servile nun, who worked in England and died in her native land in 1894, is a colourless and un inspiring production. It is a pity' that a life of so much goodness and devotion should be presented to the public as a series of pious platitudes (and not always useful platitudes), cliches from the repository for the sale of " religious articles." (Sands, 55.)
