From the sermon in Farm Street preached by Mgr. Leo Parker, Bishop of Northampton :
As you and all men conceive journalise'. its special business centres upon two things closely connected: news mad continent. Your professional weapons in the ordered body of militant Christendom are therefore the footgear of the precursor of the Gospel, and the shield of faith.
You are not the only profession, or rathet the whole of the ply lession, trained to the use of these orals. As a whole your professional wing of the army includes ail lay teachers whose function is to report matters of fact. or propound arguments of reason, or U) enforce probable reasons with persuasive arguments of faith. You, as journalists, are. if you like, the free-lances and outriders in this great phalanx. You run before the rest of your division—before the university professors with their lectures and books, before the school teachers with their primer and rod.
You, as forerunners and heralds and observers trod voices in the wilderness, beat out a path for them arross the frontier mountains into enemy country. You, with them intmediately following you, go where the official ministers of supernatural grace and truth cannot yet be received or heard. For you -go amongst those who have subverted the law of nature and the Title of reason.
You go to tell them. in human language they can still, let us hope, understand, how unclean they are, and what wrath they are bringing on their own heads, You tell them of those who will come after you, v'hose lesson of eternal truth will increase when the importance of your reports of ephemeral news gird your pao lug comment in it begins to decrease.
Disciples of John the Baptist, received everywhere like hint because of the sensation you cause in your day, you go backwards and forwards between him and Christ reporting what you have seen and heard.
