ACCORDING to the Catholic Truth Society's estimate, the Catholic population of England and Wales is at least 5,500,000, or nearly 12 per cent of the total population. This is about 50 per cent higher than the figures given in the "Catholic Directory".
"There is not the slightest doubt", says the current issue of the
C.T.S. quarterly "Catholic Truth", "that by the time these lines are read there will be at least 5,500,000 Catholics in England and Wales, or nearly 12 per cent."
The review goes on to say that, in the experience of missioners and parish priests who have conducted door to door surveys, the Catholics known to the clergy are less than three-quarters of all the Catholics in the country, and that Mass attendance is just over 40 per cent or all the adult Catholic population.
At a conservative estimate, "Catholic Truth" reckons that there must be 500,000 Massgoing families in England and Wales.
