The nineteenth annual Summer School of the Catholic Social Guild will open on July 31.
During the week, Fr. Lewis Watt, S.J., will give three lectures on the State: Totalitarian, liberal, Christian. The Rev. C. Lucey, D.D., of Maynooth, will speak on the Social Question: a Religious and Moral Question, and on Social Reconstruction in the light of the Encyclical Quadragesimo Anno.
A series of lectures will deal with international problems. Mr. J. Eppstein will lecture on the Fate of the League: the Moral Principles involved, and on the Problem of the Refugees: a Challenge to Humanity. This lecture will have special value in view of the Evian Conference on Refugees, and Mr. Eppstein's own work with the Cardinal's Committee..
The I.L.O.
Fr. A. Le Roy, Si, who is on the staff of the International Labour Organisation, which keeps contacts between the Catholic social organisations and the foreign missions, will speak on the work of the I.L.O.
Miss Barbara Ward will deal with some Central European problems and Mr. 0. Spencer, one of our younger Catholics who has had a brilliant career at the London School of Economics, will close the series with a lecture on international monetary co-operation.
Destitution
Mr. Bernard Sullivan, once a member of a pioneer study club in the earliest days of the Guild, now Secretary of the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers and Chairman of the Public Aesistance Committee of the London County Council will speak on Destitution and the Community with some reference to the remarkable work of co-ordination between voluntary and official bodies which has been promoted under L.C.C. auspices.
Mr. E. Cockett, a Lancashire man now working in a London garage, past student of the Catholic Workers' College and recently appointed to the Board of Westminster Catholic Action, will speak with exceptional experience on the work of the Guild and how it is to be done. Another past student of the College, Mr. J. R. Kirwan, will discuss present-day tendencies towards corporatism in Great Britain.
