OXFORD HONOURS BELLOC

TN a packed Oxford Union debating

hall last week Sir Duff Cooper unveiled the foundation portrait for the proposed new gallery of distinguished ex-presidents.

The curtain rolled aside to reveal James Gunn's striking portrait of Hilaire Belloc, bearded, his eyes as full as fire as ever.

The House chose for debate four lines from the Dedicatory Ode: The thing is very much too wide And much too deep and much too hollow, And learned men on either side Use arguments we cannot follow. Mr. St. John Stevas. the Catholic ex-President of the,Cambridge Union. moved the motion, paying tribute to Mr. 13elloc's service as an historian, economist and, above all, an inspiring and noble Catholic champion. Sir Duff Cooper dwelt on Befloc's virtues as a poet and a friend. It was. he predicted, in his poetry above all that Hilaire Relive would be remembered.
