Canon James Mahoney,
Canon James Mahoney, one of the bests known and most respected priests in South London, died suddenly at Deal on Wednesday. September 28.
Canon Mahoney was born on June 28, 1873, in Kent, of Irish parents. He was educated at St. Wilfrid's College, Oakamoor, and at the English College, Rome, where he gained a Doctorate of Philosophy.
He was ordained priest in 1900, and his first appointment was as assistant priest., at Woolwich. From Woolwich he moved to a rectorship at Dartford, where he remained for ten years. Most of the improvements in that parish were directly due to his energy, which found a wider field in 1916 in Deptford.
His work in this borough as town councillor and Poor Law Guardian was but a prelude to wider spheres of usefulness as representative for Deptford on the London County Council.
He was made a Honorary Canon of Southwark in 1933.
Canon Mahoney served for rawly years on the Education Committee of the L.C.C.
Requiem Mass was sung in St. George's Cathedral corant archiepiscopo by Mgr. W. Brown, Bishop of Pella. Archbishop Amigo gave the Absolutions and at the interment at Brockley in the Knill Chantry the Bishop of Brentwood was represented by Mgr. O'Grady. Mgr. Howlett, Mgr. Evans and Mgr, Hall were present.
The chairman of the L.C.C. and several members of the Education Committee also paid their last respects to their priest colleague by being present at the burial.
