Sam Taylor-Wood’s first featurelength film, about John Lennon’s crucial teenage years and his relationships with his mother and aunt, hit the spot with a strong script and solid cast. Newcomer Aaron Johnson plays the teenager with a burning ambition, torn between his uptight but dependable middle-class aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his bohemian, musical and feckless mother (Anne-Marie Duff). Lennon went on to stand for the latter lifestyle but owed his success to the former.
