An ugly episode

Keywords: Maciel, Despise

From Mr Mervyn Maciel SIR – I was amazed to see that the Foreign Office saw fit to “move to another department” the official who was responsible for authorising the circulation of the despicable and highly offensive memo (Report, April 30).

To be quite honest, the entire team dealing with the papal visit should have been sacked. The lack of appropriate action by the Foreign Office trivialises the whole ugly episode.

I hate to contemplate what mayhem and possibly bloodshed would have been unleashed on the streets of Britain, and perhaps further afield, had the subject of a similar vile memo been a highly respected Muslim cleric.

Yours faithfully, MERVYN MACIEL Sutton, Surrey
