SOME of our readers' letters commenting on the Catholic Herald report (April 2) on the Guild of Our Lady of Ransom have had to be treated, ad cautelam, as "not for publication" because of o%er enthusiasm producing possible libel.
The critics of the Guild have been, in one or two cases. attacked with a degree of intemperance which would unquestionably embarrass the Guild's numerous, reasonableminded supporters.
The main point of the Catholic Herald's original report, moreover, has been missed in the same letters. No campaign of violent attack has been mounted on the Guild.
To suggest that there has does disservice to the Guild itself since it is an attitude uncharacteristic of the average Guild member. It is also a case of protesting too much.
The object of the original report was to point out that there had been demands for greater disclosure to members of the affairs, particularly the financial ones, of the Guild. Nothing more.
