Japan friar dies

BROTHER Zeno Zebrowski, a Polish Conventional Franciscan who was a missionary for 52 years in Japan, died on April 24 in Tokyo. He was 90. Brother Zebrowski, who arrived in Nagasaki, Japan, on April 24, 1930, with Blessed Maximillian Kolbe, met with Pope John Paul II in 1981, during the papal visit to Japan.

Nun killed

A PORTUGUESE missionary nun was killed by guerrillas April 27 in Luanda, Angola, Vatican Radio has reported. Sister Celeste Goncalves Abreo, 33, was attacked at her mission in the Novo Redondo zone of the African nation. A catechist was seriously wounded in the attack and a male missionary was taken hostage. Neither of the two was named.

Focolare

MORE THAN. 8,000 priests and religious attended the first International Congress Focalare held in Rome last week. Pope John Paul II, who was the main concelebrant of Mass, stressed the importance of priests being in unity with their bishops or religious superiors.

Cody will

CARDINAL John Cody, who died last week, has left the bulk of his estate to care for sick and elderly priests.

Muslim gunman

A LONE Muslim gunman open fire and tossed a grenade into a Catholic church in Beirut on Sunday. Several people were killed.

Rome arrests

POLICE have arrested two Italian youths alleged to have threatened to kill the Pope when he visited the church of St Ponziano in Rome on Sunday.

Substitute

l'RESIDEN'T Reagan has ordered the name of a submarine to be changed from "C'orpus Christi" to "City of Corpus Christi" after complaints from Church leaders.

Vatican Art

A VA TIC'AN collection of 200 masterpieces, including works by Raphael, Bernini and Leonardo da Vinci, will be shown in the United States next year starting in New York.

Resignation

THE POPE has accepted the resignation of ( ardinal Roger Etchegaray as prelate of the Mission of France, an association of priests specialising in the pastoral care of those living in de-C'hristianised areas of France.
