Cardinals' double ceremony

THE 19 new Cardinals named by Pope Paul last week will receive their red birettas of princely rank at a public ceremony in the Vatican's audience hall on May 24.

But the Pope will only place the cardinalate rings on their fingers at a public concelebrated Mass in St Peter's on Ascension Thursday, May 27.

Preceding the public consistory in the audience ,hall, Pope Paul will hold a secret Consistory at which he will officially elevate them to the College and assign them their titular churches.

During this Consistory. the Pope is also expected to present the causes of new canonizations and beatifications of the Church for the approval of the College.

A large number of Metropolitan Archbishops will receive the pallium at the hands of the Pontiff during this consistory.
