SECRET MASS IN MADRID

Priest in Bath Robe " If you know where to go you can hear Mass in Madrid—a priest wearing a white bath robe over an ordinary suit says Mass at a bare kitchen table with crockery for altar vessels. In a second he can whisk off his robe. and the room gives no sign to the suspicious visitor of what has been happening." writes Henry W. Buckley, Daily Telegraph Madrid correspondent.

The writer contrasts this persecution Mass for Catholic republicans with Masses celebrated elsewhere for the benefit of scout Nationalists " who are willing to take any risks to damage the Government cause."

Flat Becomes Convent

He also describes an interview with a Mother Superior who lives with her nuns in a flat, where they have been since July 19. She stated that about 100 priests had been shot in Madrid and many more in the Madrid Province.

" How many people have been shot altogether in Madrid?" he asked a stal wart. supporter of Gen. Franco. His answer was: "At least 75,000."

He asked the same question of a Government police official. He thought, It the most, 10,000.

Gen. Franco's supporter thought that about 20 people a week were still being shot.
