Germans for Worth seminar
Saint Thomas More will be the centre of attention when a party of Germans fly to England on March 31. They are coming to attend a seminar on the sixteenth century saint at the Benedictine Abbey of Worth, near Crawley, Sussex. The seminar will last six days and it will include lectures on St Thomas's spirituality, his character and his relevance to the present day. Participants will visit the cell where More was imprisoned in London.
The seminar is being arranged b■ the director of the ThomasMorms-Akademie in Bensberg, near Cologne. who is responding to great interest in Thomas More among German Catholics, The organisers hope that devotees of the saint in England will want to join the German party for the seminar, which is to be held entirely in English.
Retreat for handicapped
Physically handicapped people from all over the country. including 15 confined to wheelchairs, attended a retreat at the weekend, specially organised for them at Westminster Diocesan Pastoral Centre at London Colney, Hertfordshire.
Sister Elizabeth, of the Poor Servants of the Mother of God,
one of the staff at the centre, said the weekend combined a retreat with social activities. including a film "Crooks in the Cloister" lent to them free by EMI and an organ recital by Mr John Foss.
On Saturday night the handicapped. who with their helpers totalled 60, were visited by friends and enjoyed a buffet supper. also being entertained by the centre's director, Canon Peter Bourne, playing his guitar.
Sister Elizabeth said it ovas the second retreat they had held for the physically handicapped, but by far the biggest. She added: "There was a simply wonderfully happy atmosphere. We at the centre benefited as much if not more than the handicapped, many of whom are such wonderful personalities."
Ambulance teams
Nine teams of St John Ambulance personnel will be on duty in St Peter's Square, Rome. to cover successively the nine weeks from June 19 to August 21, where they will carry the total responsibility for first aid for the vast crowds cxpectcd on occasion to total 100,000 who will visit the square daily, during the summer period of Holy Year. Each team will comprise two doctors, four nurses and eight helpers (all volunteer St John Ambulance Brigade members) and each team will undertake the duty over a minimum of 12 hours a day tor a week.
The Order of St John has accepted responsibility for their accommodation and maintenance for seven of the nine weeks. which will total about £2,860. It is appealing for funds for this purpose.
The teams will be based in a well-equipped first aid centre established next to the guardroom of the Swiss Guards, adjacent to the Basilica of St Peter.
The assignment has arisen from an invitation from the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order to share the duty with teams from several European countries, Chosen from 500 volunteers of various religious faiths, each of the 126 people involved will pay the return fare to Rome' out of his or her own pocket.
Jesuit demands FBI file On a visit to the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters in Washington, Fr Robert Drinan, a Jesuit Congressman from Massachusetts, found himself walking past the files and opened the drawer marked "D".
There. according to a report in The Times, he found his own name and 20 to 30 cards bearing references to his professional life before election.
Angry officials rushed up and hauled him away from the files. Now Fr Drinan is demanding that the files be given to him under the Freedom of Information Act.
