May I draw the attention of your readers to the plight of Professor Jacques Chonchol, Former Minister of Agriculture in the late President Allende's Government and Director or the Centre for Agrarian Studies in the Catholic University of Santiago?
This brilliant academic and social reformer is still in the Venezuelan Embassy where he took refuge after last year's coup. His wife tells me that General Pinochet has refused to guarantee him safe conduct, either to join his family in France of his friends and colleagues in England.
Perhaps those who know and admire Professor Chonchol. either personally or through his writings and work for the 'campesinos', in Chile will make the appropriate representations to the Chilean authorities in order to secure his freedom.
Fr Ian McLean, o. proem., Our Lady of England Priory, Storrington, Sussex.
