Mgr. Guido del Mestri. Secretary of the Papal Nunciature in Bucharest, vvho was alleged by the prosecution to have taken part in an anti-State plot, was in the public gallery of a court which on Tuesday sentenced two of seven defendants to death. The others received from seven to 20 years' hard labour. The seven had pleaded guilty to spying and plotting the overthrow of the Communist regime upder the direction of the ,Papal Regent, the U.S. Bishop Patrick O'Hara. One of them was Nicolaes Popescu, chauffeur and cornier for the Nunciature, who "confessed " that he had given secret information to Mgr. O'Hara to be sent abroad.
