Cardinal Hume to be our man in Poland
by Lucy Lethbridge CARDINAL BASIL Hume has been invited to be the Pope's special delegate at the anniversary of the International Meeting of Youth held at Jasna Gora in Poland next week.
Cardinal Jozef Glemp, the Primate of Poland, expressed his "great joy" this week at the news that the Cardinal had been appointed by John Paul H to represent the Holy See at the annual youth conference.
In his letter to Cardinal Hume this week, the Polish Primate invited the cardinal to give a speech during the evening meditation, which is known as the "appeal of Mary".
Last year's gathering of young people in Czestochowa, home of the shrine of the Black Madonna, numbered more than 10,000 young people from around the world.
The Cardinal, who will preside over a special Mass on August 15, was among the numerous British delegates present at the youth conference last year, which was addressed by Pope John Paul II.
