Respect the convert as much as the cradle Catholic

IN HER LETTER attacking William Oddie's article on the monarchy (Catholic Herald, 9 August), Moya Frenz St Leger accuses him of "throwing stones". Was he "throwing stones" in the previous week's article in which he attacked medical researchers for their indifference to human life? Or did he just use his God-given conscience

to offer criticism where it was deserved?

Apparently in Ms St Leger's view, monarchs are like Calpurnia above criticism but this is by no means a Christian view, otherwise St John the Baptist would not have reproved King Herod or been canonised for it. She also suggests, rather patronisingly, that it is because Dr Oddie is a convert that he writes like he does, and that when he has "quietened down" he will mature out of all this. No give the man his head, the newest convert has the same status and has the same right to speak as a cradle Catholic of a life-time's standing. No elite in this club! lain Colquhoun RGN Killay, Swansea
