From Fr Peter D McGuire SIR – We all now have to accept that the new English translation of the Roman Missal is set for the foreseeable future and will be introduced later this year. But in his article supporting “for many” rather than the present “for all” (Feature, April 29), I see that Stratford Caldecott also prefers “chalice” to what he claims to be “the more prosaic ‘cup’ ”. This part of the Eucharistic Prayer is a direct quotation from the scriptures. Our modern English translations of the scriptures use the word “cup”. The word “chalice” is a later, one might even say liturgical word. I think it is to be regrettable that, at the heart of the Eucharistic Prayer, the Words of Consecration are thereby somewhat distanced from their scriptural source.
Yours faithfully, PETER McGUIRE Sacred Heart, Spinkhill, Derbyshire
