New life for St. Teresa's
sT. Teresa's Hospital, Wimbledon, which was originally established as a
maternity unit for mothers in difficult financial circumstances, is now once more able to perform this service, if only to a limited degree.
This is because the League of Friends of St. Teresa's
Hospital have. through a continuous programme of fund raising, been zible to set up an Endowment Scheme. This will enable mothers who need special care to be admitted at minimal fees, subsidised from the fund. About forty patients may benefit this year.
The National Health Service contract was removed from the hospital in 1967, since when the band of voluntary workers have assisted the Sisters of St. Anne, who own ,ind run the hospital. to keep the doors Open. Besides organising fund raising activities. the 300-strong League of Friends gives up much spare time to do clerical work. help in the linen room, man the switchboard, wash up, and run the hospital shop.
The League consists of a cross section of local people,
and includes librarians, secretaries, chartered accountants, teachers, doctors' wives and a Chief Constable.
Under the Endowment Scheme. facilities will be available to the natients of four Wimbledon doctors, but it is hoped that with public support the availability of the service will be extended. All patients' applications to be considered under The scheme are to be treated in confidence, so that not even the committee will know their names.
