THE Vatican and the Presbyterian Church have decided to establish a joint commission to study mutual problems and pinpoint questions of theological agreement and disagreement, the Secretariat for Christian Unity announced this week.
The commission will carry out "bilateral dialogue" on religious matters. It will be the third such commission. Earlier study groups were established by the Vatican with Methodist and Lutheran churchmen.
Vatican and Presbyterian Churchmen have met a number of times over the past three or four years and Presbyterian Church leaders attended the Vatican Ecumenical Council as observers.
