SOCIAL JUSTICE VIA LIBERALS?

is certainly true that there is no opposition, no alternative party for whom one can vote." This sentence spoilt a splendid review of the Budget proposals in your issue of April 21.

How terrible if this statement but this does not mean that the were true; fortunately it is cornalternative does not exist.

Apart from the Official Opposition whose absentee members showed apathy by not voting after the recent debate on the Budget proposals, there is also the Liberal opposition which is rapidly gaining strength and support in the country. Although its M.P.s number only six, these six speak with more authority than any other half a dozen Members of Parliament.

The Liberal Party strongly condemned Mr. Selwyn Lloyd's Budget. Unfortunately their press statement was, as usual, ignored by most of the national daily newspapers and did not get the publicity it deserved. The Liberal Party have plans for radical changes in the taxation system which would give relief to all sections of the community, encouraging everyone towards greater productivity and so increasing our national wealth, rewarding •hard work instead of discouraging it as the present systern does.

Let the CATHOUC HERALD give a lead where the national newspapers fail. Do not imitate them by ignoring the Liberal Party when its policies deserve comment. Mr. Quinn failed to see any alternative,

Chairman, Guildford Young Liberals 12 Manor Crescent, Guildford, Surrey.

S'_ There are surely many Christian trades unionists who are disturbed by the activities of Marxists inside the various unions and the impact that many Communists are making.

Many trade unionists also do not feel able to throw in their political lot with either the Labour Party or the Tories and consequently feel themselves to be in a negative wilderness, unable to do anything about anything.

May I suggest that such people need remain inactive in a negative wilderness no longer.

The new Liberal Party, now demonstrating its virility in the politico-social field. has an active trade union section arid publishes its own magazine United.

The field for action in the fight to obtain social justice is not closed because one is not a Socialist.
