From Mr Stuart Sexton SIR – I totally agree with the first opinion offered by Fr Julian Shurgold (Letters, July 1), that all the previous Holy Days of Obligation should be restored to their proper date, but Masses should be said on those days (preferably one in the morning and one in the evening) but that the obligation on pain of sin should be removed. I would add to the list the feasts of the Immaculate Conception, Mary Mother of God, St Joseph, Sacred Heart and All Souls. In England I would add the feast of St George.
I accept that for many people attending Mass and abstaining from work on such days can prove impossible, though I suspect that if this first opinion were adopted many more would attend Mass on those days.
Yours faithfully, STUART SEXTON Sanderstead, Surrey
