China refusal

BISHOP John Baptist Wu of Hong )(Ong, currently visiting neighbouring China, has been refused permission to meet 84-year-old Bishop Ignatius Gong of Shanghai. Bishop Gong has been impristmed by the Communist authorities since 1955.

Right to worship

AT AN international conference in Stuttgart, Cardinal KOnig of Vienna said that In communist statesthere is no freedom to practie. e religion in an acceptable way. He commented that freedom of worship is more and more widely regarded as an elementary human right and that those who continue to ignore the right will lose international prestige.

Radio retracts

VATICAN Radio has withdrawn its allegation that Mrs Ave Seargill had to be intervidved for a broadcast twice because her references to British political leaders were "vulgar and scurrilous" (as reported by the Catholic Herald). Mrs Scargill was interviewed only once and no vulgar or scurrilous language was used..

Singing nun

JEANINE Deckers, who topped the US charts in 1963 as the "Singing Nun" with Dominique, has been found dead at her home in Belgium. Miss Deckers, who left her order in 1966, gave the profits of her records and a subsequent film to the Dominican order. Her suicide is believed to have been brought on by her depression at the closure of a children's home with which she was involved.
