ARCHBISHOP Derek Worlock of Liverpool and Giles Radice MP, the Shadow Education spokesman, were among the speakers at the annual conference of the Catholic Teachers' Federation which took place at De La Salle College from Thursday to Sunday of this week.

Papal medal

POPE John Paul has awarded the medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice to Richard Strudwick who is the Prime Warden Elect of the Guild of Mace Bearers, and who has held the office of Sergeant-al-Mace to Lord Mayors of Leeds for many years.

A CANON at Bristol Cathedral has launched an appeal to emancipate clergyman's wives from their traditional roles as dowdy, talkative busy-bodies with large hats. "The ecclesiastical memsahib" should give way to a more modern, forward-looking model, Canon John Rogan said.

ARCHBISHOP Thomas Winning of Glasgow has been elected as the new President of the Scottish Bishops Conference in succession to Cardinal Gordon Gray whose resignation as Archbishop of SI Andrews and Edinburgh was announced last November.
