Dim Religious Background

SIR,-"Torquemada" is reading history backwards; he is judging John Wesley from his own time and standards.
If he will visualise England in the 18th century, and put Wesley against that extremely dim religious background, I think he will have to admit (despite his brave repudiation of heretics) that he was indeed a light in a dark age.
Wesley lived for God, i.e., for God as far as he knew Him: he spent his life in His service and God rewarded his efforts abundantly.
Those Catholics who refuse to see and appreciate good in other than Catholics do our cause much harm. All that is good is from God, or, to quote Justin: "Whatever has been uttered aright by any men in any place belongs to us Christians."
Martin Smith.
