TOM PALMER, who is in charge of the faithful band of bell-ringers at the redemptorist Church of St Mary's Clapham Common, London, the only Catholic church in London with a peal of bells, is celebrating 50 years of bell ringing.
He was first attracted to the sound of bells while on school holidays in Ilmington village in the Cotswolds, in the thirties and is one of the original members of the Society of St Mary's Change Ringers.
These bells lead him to the Faith, as he tells me that he was brought up by his parents to make up his own mind about religion.
