Parting of the waters

I DID NOT see the TV programme which dealt with the crossing of the Red Sea by the children of Israel. The volcanic eruption seems too far fetched and not supported by sufficient evidence to be acceptable.

A more likely theory which is mentioned in the commentary on Exodus in the series The Pentateuch and Haftorahs edited by a former Chief Rabbi Dr J H Hertz (Oxford University Press 1930 p.158), is that the children of Israel crossed the upper reaches of the Gulf of Suez of the Red Sea from their camps in Goshen, the north eastern part of Egypt, at low tide, whereas Pharaoh and his army were caught by the incoming tide, as King John was when crossing the Wash.

I cannot accept the version that the waters stood up on either side of the dry land as in the film The Ten Commandments and in Exodus chap. 14, v.29.
