"The world is sick unto death. It is sufiering from a dreadful disease which is eating into the sauna GI OM CiVidSail011, declared Fr. James Geary, chaplain to the Young Christian Teachers, audress.ng a public meeting in St. Marie's Hale Southport, lust week, under the auspices of the deanery council of Catholic Action.
The newspapers never mentioned this disease, said Fr Geary, although its victims numbered hundreds of millions, and it was active in the heart of every nation. including our own. It infected homes and destroyed peace and family life. It emrsed friction, btrikus and. unoold misery in national and international life.
The two chiet symptoms by which one could recognise this disease were ingrowing eyeballs and imhing palms. Ingrowing eyeballs made a man always see number one first and itching palms were always on the grab. The disease was commonly smiled " Gimme " or "Get."
Like most diseases " Gimme" has a long Latin name—matelialism, which, according to the Oxford Dictionary is "a way of life devoted to material interests," so " Gimme " is a way of life, said Fr. Geary.
If in every office, workshop and factory and in every home we saw loved and served Christ that would be the end of Capitalism. If we cared as much for the .Kingdom of Christ as Communists care for their illusions, we would make to Christ the same total surrender of 'self which they make for their evil dreams we would no longer shrink the responsibility of being Christians, we would live like Christians, think and talk and serve like Christians. That would he the end of Oprnmunism and the beginning of the Kingdom of God.
