" Riches Are Not For The Church "

—CARDINAL FRINGS TO THE Y.C.W.
On Sunday last, June 29, the Y.C.W. in Canada celebrated the 15th anniversary of the founding of the movement in Canada with a National Congress in Montreal.
This National Canadian Congress followed an International Study Week held in buildings at Mount Royal of Montreal University, at which Canon Cardijn, the founder of the Y.C.W.. and delegates from many countries, were present.
In the course of the week, Cardinal Frings, Archbishop of Cologne, celebrated Mass at the Canadian Y.C.W. Centrale, and paid tribute to the movement which at the present time ih being established in Germany.
1 was agreeably surprised," said Cardinal Frings, " upon my arrival in Canada, to see proof once more by my contacts with the Y.C.W. of the universality of the Church."
" It has been a joy to me," continued Cardinal Frings, " to see the evangelical simplicity which reigns in this house. You are. all of you, workers, and your Centrale is simple and modest.
" You possess the mark of the spirit of Christ. Riches are not for the Chursh.
"1 have celebrated this Mass with you and for you, Young Christian Workers from all corners of the earth, for the developments of the Y.C.W. in each of your countries and most particularly in Canada,
which at the moment offers you such warm hospitality.
" 1 offer this Mass also in union with the Y.C.W. in Germany, who have made a beginning and from now on have great hopes," concluded the great Archbishop of Cologne.
Pat Keegan, International Secretary, and President of the English Y.C.W.. addressing the study week, is reported by Reuter as saying that the babies of English working mothers are not always well cared for because of inadequate nursery facilities. despite the need for women in industry.
He told the delegates that the Y.C.W. in England had asked the Government to investigate youth labour conditions.
The conference approved a statement that youth must see that adequate labour legislation is enacted and made effective in all countries of the world.
A crowded programme from June 19 to June 28 included an official reception at Montreal City Hall, participation in the Ottawa Marian Congress, a reception by a group of delegates at the Houses of Parliament in Ottawa; ceremonies at which Canon Cardijn received honorary degrees from Ottawa and Montreal Universities.
The National Congress is to be followed by regional congresses in all the Canadian dioceses in which the Y.C.W. has been established.
