BRENTWOOD IS to link with the new South African diocese .of Dundee and will shortly be sending two people out to South Africa on a fact-finding visit, it was announced.
The proposed link between the two dioceses came from Bishop Thomas McMahon of Brentwood following a meeting with Bishop Paschal Rowland of the South African diocese. Bishop Rowland, 55, was born in Essex and first went to the missions thirty years ago.
Crippled by drought, the diocese of Dundee, in Natal, in the east of the country is largely made of small farmers, struggling to survive in the face of failed harvests and dying livestock. CAFOD -recently donated £10,000 to the area.
Describing the venture as "one of the most exciting projects we have ever been involved in", Mrs Sheila O'Keefe chairwoman of the Brentwood diocesan commission for Justice and Peace is setting up a working
party to help establish contacts with people of all walks of life, "rich and poor, black, coloured and white, supporters of different faiths and different political parties".
