£32m Rome plans for Holy Year

The authorities of the City of Rome have approved the expenditure of the equivalent of £32 million for public works to improve the general health and beauty of the city in time for Holy Year.

The projects include improvements in the sewerage system, cleaning the polluted Tiber and installation of sewage treating plants to protect the heavily polluted coasts on each side of the Tiber estuary.

The money is also intended to cover the cost of removing most of Rome's shanty towns. embellishing. existing parks and green spaces and creating new ones.

So far 440 new buses have hee,n ordered. This order is expected to he doubled. Tramways are to be put hack on to the streets. Their replacement by buses is now reckoned to have been a change for the worse.
